When Shailene Woodley was cut from The Amazing Spider-Man 2, many fans were curious as to whether she would be back as Mary Jane in the third Spider-Man film. In a recent interview she explains that her commitment to the “Divergent” franchise will most likely keep her from returning. This isn’t entirely surprising, and while she doesn’t seem certain that she won’t return, one would think that she would know by now whether she would be coming back for the third Spider-Man film.
If “Divergent” is a success financially and critically, it may be for the better since she will be able to focus on those sequels without spreading herself too thin. As Woodley says in the interview, “I don’t know how I could keep my sanity doing two big action films in one year.”
It was quite the buzz when Shailene Woodley’s character was cut from Amazing Spider-Man 2, but word was that the studio simply felt it wasn’t the right time to introduce her character. Woodley previously revealed that she only had three or four scenes in the film, which was most likely the reason the character was cut. Woodley was understandably disappointed by the decision back when it originally came out that her character was cut from the film, saying, “Of course I’m bummed. But I am a firm believer in everything happening for a specific reason… based on the proposed plot, I completely understand the need for holding off on introducing (Mary Jane) until the next film.”
Sony and Marc Webb looked at what stories they could tell in 3 and 4 and wanted to introduce Mary Jane at a later time to flesh out her character more. Now we know that the Sinister Six villains will be introduced as well. Only time will tell, but we think Shailene Woodley would have been excellent in director Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man franchise as Mary Jane.
